User Reputation System

Coded by ntd1712

QUOTE
Its basis comes from the opinions of all of your forum users that choose take part in it.
Users gain and lose reputation based on how their posts are scored by other forum participants. Users with the ability to affect reputation, will either give or take aways points by approving or disapproving with a post's content.

All of the factors that affect a user's reputation score are found in the User Reputation section of the MANAGER page and the TOOLS & SETTINGS page. Please view that section of the manual for more information on controlling how users are able to affect another user's reputation.

Basically, you can review anybody's post and give them a "positive" or negative" rating, as well as a short review, if you wish. You can't review the same persons post more than once unless you review 10 other people.

These are the settings I've got:
  • For every X number of days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power - set at 365 days. ie. every year you are a member you get one extra point of reputation power.
  • For every X number of posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power - set at 1000.
  • For every X points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power - set at 100
  • How many posts must a user have before his reputation hits count on others - set at 50
  • How much reputation must a user have before his reputation hits count on others - set at 5 (the default reputation everybody starts with is 5 so your opinions count immediately)
  • How many reputation clicks can a user give over each 24 hour period? Administrators are exempt from this limit - set at 10
  • How many different users must you give reputation to before you can hit the same person again? Administrators are exempt from this limit - set at 10
As time goes on, the system may be tweaked, but please let us know how you like it...
Yes, it is starting now. Everything has a beginning and this is the beginning of the user reputation system. If you're just as helpful going forward, you have nothing to worry about.

As for whether it's a fair system? We think it is. It's a much better measure for our type of community. In the end, with or without the visual indicator, people have a reputation. It shouldn't be a contest like post count became.

We'll never please everyone, but this comes closest to the type of community we want to create.

We are still testing this modification but feel free to use it.

I've noticed member's been using the reputation system and that is great.

However, please do use it to "compliment" a specific post instead of general compliment and vice versa. This reputation system does seem to give more "reputation power" to those who actively used it, but please do not abuse it to get more "power" to affect your own.

Again use this system for specific posts only please.
Future repetitive abuse on this will result in a reputation reset.
Remember that this is one of the props to help enhance members experience on this forum.

It's currently disabled. We'll be installing a better one at the next board upgrade.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I wondered what it was for. Thanks for explaining that.

A new reputation system has been installed and all members are welcome to use it. This is a more simpler and direct rep system than the the last one we used.

Please use this rep system to selectively approve or dissaprove post qualities. A new reps point added to other member's with comments like "you're cool!" or" you're sucks" is really not very intelligent and beats the purpose of the rep system.

Member's with more than 30 posts can raise or lower other member's reputation.

Comments of user added reps by members will be periodically reviewed by mods and admins so please use it wisely.

HTML is not supported on the reps comment box, so don't use smileys/other formattings and use plain texts only please.

Comments and feedback on this is welcome (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I got a problem with this system because while I can see who the karma is comming from I have no idea why or to what post they are reffering. Unless I can tell what I'm doing that upsets somebody I can't change it or defend it and apparently people are not required to actually comment. Personally I am of the mind that if you dimminish somebody's reputation without any explaination, I'm just going to return the favor. To me it justs like sending somebody + - rep points because the're "cool" or "stupid", the reason doesn't justify the action, imo.

I grew up where reputation meant respect. And weather its on the streets or the internet it is a big deal to me. I find it disrespectful to take away points without having the courage to at least explain whats up. It might sound silly but if I'm going to be an affective moderator I need to know why I'm given points, + or -

Yes you can view from which post/s the reputation is came from. Click on your reps again and look to your top right and find the text "where".

Good point. Empty reputation comments will get deleted, and so will reps given/taken away without any weight on it.

Anyone who repeatedly abuses the rep system, ie. mass reps spamming (which is the reason I disabled and replaced the last rep system with this transparent version) will be put in 7 days moderation or even get banned.

Remember, it's only a prop to enhance your online experience, NOT a scoreboard to demonstrate how powerful or how influential you are.

Watch your language please (IMG:style_emoticons/default/butcher.gif)

There is strict flood control applied to the reputation system to help prevent abuse and spamming.
All members can only give one reputation point per day and member can't change the same member's Reputation again in three days. Give or take away other's rep points wisely. Use it or don't!

Greetings 'Noohn-Kehk,

Are you talking about little tan square boxes? I have 5 of those from when I first joined the forum and did not know that it is a huge no no here to put your email in your signature. It means that you bent a rule and a moderator got upset about it. No one can see the boxes except you. If you go back through your posts you will find somewhere that a moderator is saying U did a no no. I guess once warned the boxes never go away. '

No...that's not the way it works! Those boxes represent a 'scale' of warning. You have three warnings then you're placed in Limbo/banned/whatever. If some of your boxes between the red and green box become a dirty orange color then you have accumulated a warning. Most times a Mod will PM a person about a problem before resorting to the warning system. We do not hand out unannounced warnings except for blatant SPAMming or abusive actions (porno, death threats etc.)

The small boxes under your name are indicators to let you know when you have reached full membership or not (by the # of posts, etc.)

Another grading system is the +/- boxes near the bottom of your placard (with the words 'reputation'). This allows you to rate others by their actions etc. Please read Kinjo's description above in this thread. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

If you look at the the boxes right where it says "warn:(0%)". The percentage tells you how naughty you've been. Spam or death threats get you banned automatically. Flaming, trolling or spell begging under the required post limmit gets you a warning. If you incure a warning your percentage will go up. Once it hits 100% percent you're done. If you look closely you can also see there is a link "warn:(0%) if you click on the percentage it will tell exactly what you've done wrong. Since your percentage is at 0 you have not done anything wrong and if you did a moderator would have pmed you about it.

Look under your avatar where it says: posts, age, gender and from ____ (location, if applicable) then you see reputation. In your case all you should see is the word and next to it any points you have gotten or the word none. Next to that is a red minus sign and a green plus sign. To give someone a positive rep point click the green sign. Negative, hit red. That should take you to the page where you can leave a comment, post smilies or whatever. Below the comment box is where you mark if you want to raise or lower one's rep. Then select the go botton below that.

Now if you do not see the plus or minus sign then either you're looking under your own avatar (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ... or you do not yet have that privilage because you are not yet a full member. Being a full member doesn't cost anything. But to encourage members to post we've set the limit to having at least 30 posts in order to be a full member. Full members can view all the forums, give reputation points, customize screen names, blog and use other features not given to new members (neophytes). In your case you only need 17 more points before you should reach the full member status (zealator).

Keep in mind posting in certain forums like the coffee shop and the neophyte halls will not count as additional posts. These forums are generally for socialization and simple discussions so the admin has decided to not let posts in these forums to count.
