I am a firm believer in making your own tools whenever possible. The more basic the material you start with, more opportunity you have to imbue every facet of the tool with energy, to define in excruciating detail what each part does, how it functions, whats its purpose. When you use the tool you make yourself it functions as a part of rather than a tool. More over all the effort of making it is "absorbed" and adds its own force to the spell. The key to having a tool that adds something to a spell is how well it is designed and if that design fits your magick.
