Choronzon, the Lord of Dispersion

Choronzon, also known as 333

Choronzon is the Lord of Hallucinations, and many mages have fallen prey to its cunning plans, and its power can't be ignored. It is a preceptor, which some claim is one of the Wyrm's most dangerous servants. Other mages whisper that it is a part of Wyrm capable of independent action. Some mages claim Choronzon is the Wyrm. The truth is not known. Choronzon appears to sometimes be a group of entities, and sometimes a single entity.

Choronzon is a spirit of dissolution, physical, mental and spiritual. Everything around it will begin to decay. It will do its best to hasten the dissolution of everything it can reach. Matter will slowly dissolve. Living beings will age and sicken. It derails the trains of thought, and turns people insane. In the vicinity of it, nothing remains untainted.

It is said that every mage must some day confront and overcome it in order to ascend. Choronzon will do its best to hinder anybody from reaching Ascension or any other goal. Its greatest triumph is when a mage loses Arete.

On December 6, 1909 Aleister Crowley foolishly let himself be possessed by the demon (Se Liber XXX Aerum, The Vision and the Voice, for more detailed descriptions). The end result was close to a disaster, and according to many mages Crowley lost the path towards Ascension.

Choronzon is confused and often quite stupid. But it is also extremely cunning and dangerous. It can manipulate people subtly while appearing to make crude attacks. The demon will almost always retreat from any attack, not even defending itself. But it will never give up, and will reappear later, in a more insidious form. The only thing it cannot abide is order and discipline. Any form of highly ordered thought, speech or behavior is abhorrent to it, and it will flee if possible (unless it could topple the order in a subtle way).

The demon seldom appears threatening to a mage. Instead it appears to be a quite confused and irritating little being, unable to do much harm. In fact, it often behaves entertainingly, incoherently discussing things that seem important to the mage. While the mage listens to the confusing demon, it will slowly plant the seeds of dissolution in the soul of the mage. Choronzon will strengthen the flaws and illusions in the victim, making the victim believe in his own self image. As the demon works on, the mage will be derailed from the path towards Ascension and turned towards dissolution and insanity. A mind infected by Choronzon will slowly decay, and the victim will be a simple matter to possess for the demon, regardless how strong-minded the victim believes he is.

It is thought that Choronzon dwells somewhere near The Horizon, in an area known as the Abyss (Which could be another name for the Deep Umbra). According to some rumors, he must be defeated by anyone venturing out into the Deep Umbra searching for a place among the Oracles.

To summon Choronzon is quite simple, almost any fool can do it. It sometimes acts as a kind of freelance paradox spirit. In many cases it has secretly encouraged the mage to continue, thus spreading entropy even more.

Choronzon very seldom manifests physically, preferring to possess people. It does this with great skill, making his victims think they are in perfect control over their own minds. When it does manifest, it will only appear as a voice. Sometimes it will manifest using many bodies and voices, giving the impression of a great horde of demons.

Choronzon initiates decay wherever he goes. This effect will make anything start to dissolve into nothing. Most of the time it uses this effect coincidentally, preferring to let dissolution take its time. Sometimes Choronzon dissolves things quickly, often for no reason. The process is subtle, but when initiated it cannot be stopped except by more powerful magick. The dissolution slowly spreads, turning matter into dust which blows away and disappears, killing life and making people slowly go insane.

Choronzon implants a destructive, irrational or confusing impulse in the mind of someone. This impulse will not go away, but will slowly grow until it becomes an obsession. Usually Choronzon implants distortions in the self image, turning people into unknowing caricatures of themselves.

The demon plants a small entropy seed inside something or someone. Most of the time it will remain there, unchanging but when stressed, it will release its entropy. A rope will suddenly break when someone's life depends on it, a horse will bolt, a mirror will crack and faith will momentarily crumble in a crisis. Choronzon does not have any control over these seeds, but spreads them liberally.

The demon is almost constantly opens the user's mind to every other mind in the area, especially nearby ones. The user will know everything anybody knows, feel every desire and fear and generally understand the secret motivations of people. Unfortunately the user is completely confused, and his own personality and knowledge is submerged. This doesn't matter to Choronzon, who hasn't got much personality in the first place. Using this rote, the demon will always talk about things that interest the listener, have beliefs somewhat like his and a uncanny way of revealing the deepest secrets of a person in an offhand way.

Greetings!

Is anyone aware of the corresponding angelic force to Choronzon?

Theoretically, a 'demonic' force is one polarity representation of an energy ... the dark or black polar extreme? Therefore the energy force which can be identified as Choronzon in one polar extreme must have a corresponding angelic or white polarity?

I just wonder if anyone knows the name of that force?

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/angel.gif)

Is it possible to 'neutralise' the effects of Choronzon by evoking the angelic aspect ... or the angelic 'alter ego' of Choronzon?

I wonder too if, historically, it has been attempted before ... applying the theorem 'there is nothing new under the sun' someone is bound to have had the same insight and made the same attempts?

I need to muster some resistance to an entity which shows all the traits of The Lord Of Dispersion.

Sorry, I am getting used to one-liners from another forum. But the only way to control a demon according to me is to experience it from it's own angle. Once done, it's integrated and neutralized in your own BIG head.

That doesn't sound like the Choronzon I know. He's a master of telling words that makes you feel like a God, and thus making your ego invincible from such attacks. You must have misinterpreted something?

Greetings!
Over the years I've read any number of disertations concerning this entity. Of course it figures more prominently in Thelemic circles but has also been known to surface in related areas. I had never heard of it outside Crowleys influence circle. Be that as it may. The Ascending Path is one that offers, at long last, a transformative journey, one which changes the seeker irrevocably. You will not be the same person. That is a bitter pill for some. Perversely it is why most 'diets' don't work. People aren't willing to give up their old, established ways/persona's. They want enlightenment without the loss of the old ego. A dieter must change the way they think/react/act toward food in order for the diet to work. Ah, well, maybe that analogy could have been better thought out...? One must undergo transformation in order to progress toward Ascension. And that will mean that we will end up destroying the old, comfortable person that we have spent so long in building. No one said it would be easy. In fact, it can be the most terrifying experience in your life. I feel that I'm teetering on the brink alot lately. But beware! One shouldn't leap into the Abyss without some idea of destination. I wish you well on your journey...perhaps we shall meet again... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smartass.gif)

I find this entity most often described as part of some of the final steps to the grade of Ipsissimus, often involving Death of the Ego and complete loss of self. Not necessarily bad things.

It should be noted that the original post was part of a website used in the creation of characters for role-playing games, which may cause some (myself in particular) to look at it with some skepticism. Here is a link to the original page.

Choronzon

The idea of the Wyrm is part of White Wolf Role-Playing Games so at best the information has been edited to meet the needs of the user.

If one truly is overwhelmed by Choronzon the seer may take the Holy Ring and inscribe BABALON .

For the puropses of discussion here is a link to the "Cry of the 10th Aethyr" from The Vision and the Voice. The Aethyr associated with Choronzon.

Cry of the 10th Aethyr

To show my source for the conquering of Choronzon I will quote.

"In this Aethyr is neither beginning nor end, for it is all hotch- potch, because it is of the wicked on earth and the damned in hell. And so long as it be hotch-potch, it mattereth little what may be written by the sea-green incorruptible Scribe.

The horror of it will be given in another place and time, and through another Seer, and that Seer shall be slain as a result of his revealing. But the present Seer, who is not P. . . ., seeth not the horror, because he is shut up, and hath no name.

(Now was there some further parleying betwixt the demon and the Scribe, concerning the departure and the writing of the word, the Scribe not knowing if it were meet that the demon should depart. "
Then the Seer took the Holy Ring, and wrote the name BABALON, that is victory over Choronzon, and he was no more manifest.)

It therefore appears that the opposition of Choronzon is BABALON

Thank you ChaosCrowley37! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ac42.gif)
I was edging on a limb there and am glad for the information. I had absolutely NO IDEA concerning the reference to the Wyrm and the White Wolf roleplaying game...(I even know one of the authors...) Again, thanks! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush2.gif)

Greetings!

I approached this angle with trepidation. I too had realised the role playing of the site where I'd extracted the initial information...

QUOTE
The idea of the Wyrm is part of White Wolf Role-Playing Games so at best the information has been edited to meet the needs of the user.

I had been exposed to a sometimes cunning/sometimes apparently dumb entity out there in the confines of my consciousness. I had thus taken on board extensive research (as you do) to identify the entity.

Choronzon seemed a candidate, especially in the light of my guided tours of the abyss over the last decade ...

QUOTE
That doesn't sound like the Choronzon I know. He's a master of telling words that makes you feel like a God, and thus making your ego invincible from such attacks. You must have misinterpreted something?

I'd had traits of this with the entity. There was a voice at times spelling out a 'royal and regal' lineage etc etc. That I was special etc etc ... I struggled with this about 15 years ago ...

QUOTE
find this entity most often described as part of some of the final steps to the grade of Ipsissimus, often involving Death of the Ego and complete loss of self. Not necessarily bad things.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/black eye.gif)

That makes more sense ... as I can associate with the 'spiritual death' ... the death of the seperate selfish self and the assimilation of the selfish self into the consciousness ... as it is very foolish to kill the seperate self ... it is a part of the conscious which when under the control of the true inner self, can be developed into a perfect disguise/armour in this sorry world ...

I grapple with my selfish seperate self ... by placing myself in the abyss ... I force myself to deal with all my skeletons, warts and all .... I had just wondered if somehow my seperate self had called in reinforcements to prevent its assimilation ...

As there may be some indecision as to what you feel is giving you problems, I remembered the following passage from "The Complete Golden Dawn" 5th Knowledge Lecture. When I have run into problems I have many times returned to this passage as I feel it gives a deep view of the cause of many of these problems. The following passage is unchanged from the original although I have capitalized for emphasis some parts.

OF OBSESSION, TRANCE, DEATH
Obsession always entereth through a cutting off of the Higher from the
Lower Will, and it is ordinarily first induced by a Thought-Ray of the Spiritual
consciousness (whence one danger of evil thoughts) ill-governed, penetrating
the Sphere of Sensation and admitting another potency, either human
embodied, or human disembodied, elemental or DEMONIC. The first action of
such a force is to FLATTER the lower will, until he shall have established firmly
an entrance into the Sphere of Sensation, and thus shall cause a strain on the
Nephesch which shall render the Ruach less concentrated. As soon as the
Ruach is sufficiently dispersed to repair the strain on the physical body, the
lower will is weakened, and is soon seized upon and bound by the invader.
Whence arise the sensations of CHILL and DROWSINESS which are the usual
forerunners of obsession. Now to yield the force necessary to overpower the
lower will from any chance of communication with the higher the obsessing
idea proceeds by seizing upon the Daath, and this consequently is the great
point of attack, especially the part in the physical body which is at the back of
the head about the junction with the Spine. Now unless the lower Will shall
voluntarily endeavour to restore the connection, it is impossible for the
Higher Will to intervene, seeing that the Lower Will is King of the Physical
Body. Remember that no obsessing force can overpower the lower will, if
that shall bravely and in spite of all opposition aspire unto the Higher
Will.

I have found these ideas an aid to ritual work to disperse problems even if it's source and name are unknown.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/ac42.gif)

Greetings and many thanks for your efforts.

I spent the weekend in a very high and disconnected state. I undertook my first professional clairvoyance demonstration in over 3 years. I fortunately subjected myself to the correct energies and connections and as a result the rest of the week has proven to be very inspiring.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smartass.gif) The level I was able to sustain aided in breaking down the level of distraction and disruption which my own self had built between my physical self and my higer astral self. With the aid of ex-humans and non-humans on the astral levels I was able to conquer my demons on the disruption level.

I could then acknowledge the thought form entity which my seperate self had created as a distraction!

The distracting personality traits are still there ... and will always be there ... but by successfully rising above the distraction and passing forth totally accurate information ... I was able to accept that which my perceptions observed.

I am still not perfect ... or enlightened ... in any way shape or form ... I am just more that which I was twenty years ago. More in control of my breathing, my mind and my self than I was when the distraction was floating around my head.

The atmosphere in this room has changed and has become a good venue for a new development group and demonstration room which I am getting off the ground in Hamilton New Zealand ...

The piece you so kindly added was very enlightening. With your permission I would like to copy and paste it and then print it off ... it has many, many levels too it and cannot be digested in one reading.

Fine with me. I consider anything put on a message board to be automatically launched into the public domain for whatever people want to do with it.

Crowley definitely made it up above the Abyss, so I cannot believe Choronzon actually derailed him.
Who doubts his Magick wasn't the Work of a Magus out of a Xtian shambles ??

I think that the notion of opposition is debatable, but certainly She is representative of a principle that is greater...or at least closer to the monad.

Thus the use in some Thelemic circles of the minor incantation, "Restriction unto the one that dwells in the Great Outer Abyss, in the name of Our Lady whose number is 156", whenever the name of the dweller is mentioned.

I seem to end up muttering it constantly when surfing internet forums nowadays, coming across threads with titles like "How do I work with C********?". The answer is that you don't, ever. There seems to be a great deal of fascination with this entity, yet little understanding. My advice would be to simply leave well alone. 99.9% of practitioners will probably have no need to go there at any point (at least this time around). If you want to do something dangerous with guys that have a dark and scary reputation then go with the Infernal Princes or something. Even that is a really bad idea unless you have genuinely attained the authority to do so, but at least you stand some chance of getting away without any serious damage if they take a liking to you and the work you are proposing, assuming you manage to achieve a genuine contact in the first place (and believe me you'll know it)!

Yes, this seems to be a common misconception. The dweller is not part of the infernal hierarchy at all. He was formed by the regret of The One for The Wrong of the Beginning. The Infernals are still Lawful, whereas the dweller and his daughters have no regard for the Law.
