In 1963 over 200,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln memorial to view a demonstration put on by participants in the civil rights movement. They were nonviolently protesting the laws and customs of discrimination. This event is what held Martin L. King’s famous speech: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. ‘We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal.’” He was a major leader in the civil rights movement, but was sadly assassinated in 1965.
