 Anti-anxiety/panic Attack Potion?

Hey.. again, i feel like ive been posting a lot lately, but thats what happens when your a beginner right? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/harhar1.gif)

Anyway, I have a couple of friends who have been feeling VERY stressed lately, one has been having panic attacks and the other anxiety attacks. Is there a potion I can make to help them? (please no alcohol, as they are both underage lol)

Try a decoction of Valerian Root with Chamomile and Skullcap Herb.
Passionflower and St. Johnswort will also be effective. (Or, ALL of the above...)
Valerian root is like Natures valium, it's NON-addictive and very calming.
Skullcap is also calming. As is the SCENTS of Neroli, Vanilla and asafoetida.
Chamomile tea is good though mild. Passionflower will ease the sleep and,
of course, St. Johnswort is the precursor to many of todays anti-depressants.
There are many more but this is what I can think of quickly..........

Potions that cultivate relaxation and calm are useful, but true anxiety disorders or depressive conditions require cognitive behavioral therapy and sometimes medication. "Panic attacks" and "anxiety attacks" are basically the same thing, and people who are afflicted with them have "anxiety disorder," which can include a wide range of concomitant somatizing disorders, vestibular and perceptual effects, and phobias and obsessions. A lifestyle overhaul and some sort of counseling or medication regimen is often required. LOL! Yes, it's true, though for millenia people have been doing quite well without psychoanalyzing and using 'modern' day medicinals , which, they even admit to, not knowing quite what they're doing.... There are certain conditions that will be best dealt with by a health professional.....BUT, have you noticed that the majority of these anti-depressants, etc. have horrendous side-effects? AND that they're now saying that young people shouldn't be put on these medications as it does more harm than good. An herbal decoction is FAR less potent than the pharmaceuticals that so-called psyche doctors hand out to their patients....which are yanked off of those and next week given something else....
I've had my share of psych-crap ladled into me to cure my 'clinical depression'.....Horsesh*t! No more! Remeron was the last crap that they tried to give me....a synthetic nasty piece of work. I took one (1) minimal dose and 'woke up' 2 days later, remembering little save that I ate an entire weeks worth of food, passed out into my soup and couldn't drive myself home from work....AFTER I had driven there! And this was 24 hrs AFTER I took the damned drug!
No.....save me from all the psyche medicines (and 98% of the other meds) to when they actually understand just how they work! It's criminal to feed this crap to kids. I'm ADHD and I grew up without Ritalin blazing across my neural pathways. It's like taking drugs for having brown hair forchrissakes! (PS I'm schololed in Pharmacy and pre-med) What Soror says has wisdom, but don't go off because Jimmy is having fits about Sally telling him to shove off!....you get my drift. There are people that need serious counseling and doctors...and there are some that need to just calm down. What I gave you for herbs will not react badly in the body...but always remain vigilant (quietly) for allergic reactions (heavy sweating, intense itching, hard time breathing, hives, etc.) If those things happen discontinue the draught and contact the physician! Enough hand-holding! Use common sense!

Actually alcohol can exacerbate anxiety problems... make them worse I mean. Sure the alcohol can have a calming affect at first. But when you come down you're stuck with either drinking more (potentially becoming an alcoholic later on in life) or suffering a hang over. See the liver produces enzymes that break down alcohol. When you drink enough that your liver cannot keep up with it, the alcohol turns toxic. This enters your blood stream and hits every major organ in your body - especially your brain and central nervous system. These toxins from the alcohol are actually what induce the "drunk" feeling. But they also bond to proteins in the brain and inhibit neurotransmitters (chemicals that regulate mood in the brain) from functioning properly; basically CAUSING depression and anxiety. So drinking is the LAST thing you'd want to do to deal with anxiety and expecially panic attacks. The other thing to keep in mind is that a healthy teenage male, who turns to regularly drinking, physical dependence to alcohol can occur in as little as 6 months. Compared to your average adult male, it can take *up to* 8 years for physical dependence to occur.

I just wanted to point that out.

As far as anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication, at your age taking such medications would not be a good idea. I do think that in extreme cases of severe anxiety and depression pills work as a last resort. Even then, most people taking such medications still feel some symptoms of some type of mood disruption. And eventually they require higher doses to manage the same level of mood disruption. That and pills only do 1/3 of the battle. 2/3 of the battle to curing mood disorders is fixing the cause of the mood disorder. Pills just mask the problem.

That takes me to herbal remedies, tincturies and potions - be careful my friend. Although I have not seen any one suggest anything I would consider dangerous or addictive, keep in mind such remedies are also only a temporary relief. In one sense depression and anxiety are a fact of life. Everybody feels both to some degree. Its only a problem when people can't cope with it or do self destructive things to deal with it.

In my humble opinion I think things like St. Johns wart, Chamomile tea and certain root extracts are fine to use for moderate anxiety problems. If the anxiety is bad enough that your friend is having straight *panic attacks* I don't think any herbal concoction (or medication for that matter) is a permanent solution. Medicines (herbal and medical) can help ease symptoms but really it comes down to facing some inner demons. Preferably with the help of a trained professional. In most situations where a person is dependant upon any kind of medication to cope with a real mood problem they end up having to take more and more of whatever in order to manage the same level of symptoms. Sometimes to the point where the same medication is no longer effective at all. Its true too with alcohol and other drugs. I've never met an alcoholic, a true alcoholic, who was happy to be one.

Panic attacks are not the same as anxiety attacks. I'll assume you know the difference. But true panic attacks at your age are not normal or healthy. I would recommend your friend at least consult your school's counselor.

Now that I've got my preaching out of the way this is another method to manage moderate anxiety anxiety AND panic attacks (key word being moderate)

Two types of oils, levender and some stuff called spice of life (which is a blend of extracts from a variety of both flowers and herbs). First lay in a comfortable position on your back with your feet elevated about 1 foot above your chest. Place one drop of spice of life over your third eye (the center of your fore head just above your eyes) rub it in for about 1-3 minutes then use two drops of lavender oil, one for each side of your temples. Rub in the lavender oil for an addition 1-3 minutes. Then rest in this comfortable position until the anxiety/panic subsides. If you cannot get spice of life, lavender oil alone can still help. And its fairly cheap too.

The key thing to bare in mind when dealing with anxiety/panic attacks is to control your breathing. It may be hard at first but try to breathe as normally as possible. The other simple way to deal with panic attacks is to hyperventilate into a small paper back.

I never advocated alcohol to solve ANYBODIES problems...coming from an alcoholic family,(a decoction, btw, is a form of TEA not an alcoholic Tincture) I, myself, do not drink (save to taste my creations...seriously....'taste' is about a teaspoons worth)
I've not heard of the spice of life...if someone could tell me more about this I would be grateful!
Acid is correct about 'panic attacks'...they are often quite debilitating. I've seen them first hand in those who regularily abuse either alcohol or other substances and in those with other severe
bi-polar and other psychiatric conditions. *sigh* When I was a kid most of these things rarely happened, if at all! Too much stress, too much environmental pollutions AND too much DRAMA!
Anxiety attacks are NOT panic attacks! Molly-coddle them all you'd like but, sometimes, a good swift kick in the ass does wonders for the moral. Unless you're at wrist slitting time, learn to either suck it up or meditate.
Taking a pill or a potion every time you get a bleeding hangnail isn't healthy either. A firm but judicious use of OTC meds is called for when meditation fails. Go to a bleeding doctor for things serious (but, and I still maintain this, we overuse the doctor 'system in todays society!) Use COMMON SENSE! (Like I said before)

i have acute 'anxiety disorder', and have had it for years - alcohol is a nasty depressant so it makes everything worse - st johnswort can cause fibromyalgia symptoms, and valerian can interfere with other meds, especially ritalin in kids - skullcap (probably chinese skullcap) is a poison that flushes the liver of sugar and can be very dangerous for diabetics

herbs are medicines, so treat them as such and rx'ing blindly without consulting the patient is always asking for trouble - just be careful - if you would try a patient on a particular herbal supplement, be sure to try them on a very tiny dose first to see if they have side effects (not sideeffects of the drug, but them - different people have different reactions to the same thing, and can have an allergic response to anything)

i almost agree with the codex alimentarius on this issue, and think that those pushing herbal drugs as 'safe supplements' need better training before our herbs are all taken away from us by the fda, due to loose use by a few

its probably just the full moon energy anyway, and that can easily mimic anxiety and cause major stress, especially if they are ignoring it

RANT! Again, I've not said one word about taking alcohol on this thread.
That's it! Keep away from anything other than water (pure) and organic, whole foodstuffs. Do not smoke, drink nor use perfumes, deodorants OR soaps, dyes, cleaning products, etc. ONLY use/wear cotton, linen , silk or wool for clothing....BUT make sure that you aren't allergic to them FIRST! Do not use paper products as these are saturated in chemicals that could harm you. Do not use toothpaste, hair gel/spray, tooth whitener OR anti-biotic creams, emolients or antiseptics. Make sure that the water purifiers that you use are only made from activated charcoal. Don't use electricity nor electronic devices ESPECIALLY computers and TV...they emit lethal levels of electromagnetic frequencies that can hurt you, they also use terrible concentrations of palladium, cadmium, arsenic and not to even mention PLASTICS!!! All fossil-fuel products should be assiduously avoided because they cause cancer...ALL of them!!! In todays society that means you will have to live in a bubble. Seriously....and even THAT is made from *gasp* PLASTIC! Review carefully the label 'Organic' on your foodstuffs. Recently the FDA has changed the definition of 'organic' so as to include many once forbidden substances. Really....TALK with your 'doctor' about nutrition...you'll be surprised (and, hopefully, horrified) by how little they know!

Look....taking some herbal tea won't hurt you. If you have a reaction to it, then stop taking it! If you have such a severe allergy to it that it will kill you, then nature just culled the herd. Use common sense....don't drink bleach! Methanol and Isopronal alcohol will hurt you/kill you! Don't utilize drugs if you can possibly help it. You can't live your life in an isolated bubble. Try to make informed choices. If your 'friends' are suffering from 'panic' attacks, then dousing them with calmatives isn't addressing the underlying root of the problem....use your head. They may be your friends but sometimes not giving in to their plea's is being more of a friend. If they need specific medical attention, get them to someone who can help. I hadn't realized that I had to even say these things. Mea Culpa! The doctor is out!, permanently, if you need to discuss this further I invite you to PM me...if this isn't to your liking, piss off! you should never consume any essential oil without a binder, or diluting agent, and taking great care - many essential oils will burn the skin, and will raise welts on the tongue and throat

most potions made with essential oils aren't meant for consuming but for anointing, aspersion, or aromatherapy

many essential oils are poison in their concentrated state, and low-quality oils may contain ethylene glycol (anti-freeze)

just be careful and think first before drinking whatever it is you've read wherever
