Hello everyone! I wanted to hear everyone's thoughts on what they consider is the best method for creating sigils (i.e. words, pictures, or mantras)? Obviously, everyone has different results based on their experiences, so please share which method worked best for you, or if you think a combination of words, pictures and mantras are more effective. I'm in the starting process of creating sigils, and I plan to try different methods, both by the book and creating what works best for me, so I will report my finds as I see results. So far, I've only experimented with the word method, mainly because it was the easiest, and I want to be come proficient at one way before I attempt another. I also incorporated a symbol within the symbol I created out of words. I.e. If I'm making a sigil for love, I drew a symbol for what I feel love means to me. Although I'm not sure if this was a good idea, because I had created various sigils, put them aside until I forgot which each one represented to charge them at a later time. But having incorporated a symbol within a symbol for the intent almost gives it away. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/black eye.gif)

Also, feel free to share different methods for charging sigil!

I feel that the best thing to do is to use whatever methodology will yield the most personally powerful sigils. Austin Osman Spare, either the founder or an early developer of sigil magick (and chaos magick techniques in general), felt that sigils should be as personal as possible in order to ensure their resonance and power, and advocated the use of techniques like automatic drawing in order to produce them. It's a good argument.

Sigilization is one of those feilds where in my opinion I think you can just make things up as you want, so long as you understand the meaning behind the symbols and they work for you.

Personally I use a linear graphical cipher. For example the witch's wheel: This can used to mathematically arrange letters around a pentegram or other secred shape. Say you want to work with a pentagram, draw one out, a good sized one so you have room to work with. It should be pointed up for this exercise. Then you would start the letter A at the top point. I'm predominantely right handed at writing, so I continue clock wise. But because you can do such a variety of different things with sigils, that is why you just have to experiment on your own to find what works for you.

To continue on with this example the next point on the pentagram reads B, the next is C and followed by D and E on the last point. Now for this graphical cipher you can choose to do what ever next. You can continue to write out the rest of the alphabet you are working with, or you can mix things up however you wish. But if you continue in a linear pattern the letter under A is F and the letter under B is G and so forth until you run out of letters. Since there are 26 letters in the English alphabet, Z is a remainder and the rest of the letters should circle your pentagram in decending order and I would put Z at the center. Then because this is a linear graphical cipher, if you want make a sigil representing a word of power you simiply write out the word following the witch's wheel as though you were just connecting the dots to appropriate letters. And there you have the simple construction of a sigil.

There are plenty of other ways to make sigils. In fact I think it'd be awesome if someone could just make this or another related topic into a pinned topic for people to just share their own methods. I know I have plenty more on my own.

Well, mine is pretty basic. I simply write my intention (is wording an issue here?), take out the repeating letters to make teh statement of intent, and then make a symbol out of the letters. I think my issue here is charging the sigil, because so many resources list different ways. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/black eye.gif)

It's not too difficult. You can imagine the sigil during the moment of orgasm, which is a huge energy release; you could also imagine it as you let your own blood and visualize the sigil filling up with it. You can go jogging or dancing with the sigil in your pocket. Whatever works. It depends on what excites you, thus augmenting the psychological experience of the operation. After you charge it, either burn it or put it away and stop thinking about it.

Spare purportedly only needed to concentrate on the sigil, but surely he was a keenly developed practitioner. To improve your focus, I recommend yogic breathing exercises. The word "samadhi" can be translated as a profound state of concentration; to be able to utilize that at your will is not only an excellent skill for meditation, but also for visualization techniques.

I'd have to say it's all about what works for you. I've experimented with Sigil Magick in two ways so far, the first was making an abstract glyph, and the second was making a three word phrase that related to the desire - I did not have much success with the second just because it didn't *feel* like Magick to me, it felt more like me saying "I want money" and hoping it'd appear, but knowing all too well it probably wouldn't. The first on the other hand has been quite successful so far.

Everyone here has given some sound advice and highly recommend that you follow them. Why I suggest is to try and make them from scratch if all possible. This way your putting your energy into the sigil. If you do buy or get a sigil from another maker. For example buying a amulet or picture of a Ankh, be sure to take the time and meditate with it and charge it with your energy before using it.

Well I've been following the simple method of using letters from my intention to create a symbol, and I've made many sigils. Forgetting about them wasn't the hard part for me (I can't even remember what some of the sigils were for), but to date, none have manifested.

Well I think right there you're looking at something improper technique. You say forgetting them wasn't the hard part, then you say but to date none have manifested. If you have forgotten what some were for then how could you know if they manifested. really that's one of the great sigil/chaos techniques, wishing for something then forgetting that you ever wished for it. As for charging, you should experiment with a variety of methods and find one, two or three that you can actually feel working well, at least that's my advice.

As far as actually getting something into astral space is concerned, it really doesn't matter. Have a thought...any thought you like...with sufficient emotion behind it, and you can be sure that that is now an astral construct.

The reason why you want to get specific, is because typically you don't want servitors to be one note thoughts. You'll usually want to give them various different characteristics; an emotional profile very often, one or two abilities, (you don't want to go beyond one or two; they lose cohesion and focus, and they start requiring far too much energy) a statue or something else physical to keep it in, a means of summoning it, and a means of feeding it, generally.

http://www.philhine.org.uk/writings/sp_functional.html

Here's one example, written about by Phil Hine. I actually still summon this spirit when I'm in supermarket queues; he works well, and is very friendly. Lines start moving much more quickly after I've summoned him.

Another point I'd make, is to realise that when you've first created a servitor, they usually don't have a lot of energy straight out of the gate. So the biggest issue is that you're going to need to feed them up for probably 3-4 days before you can expect them to do anything meaningful.

As a final suggestion; never make them nasty. A bad tempered or vindictive servitor, is a servitor who is just as likely to turn on you as anyone else; and even if they do only target other people offensively, you're looking at karmic problems down the line, because you are karmically credited for everything the servitor does. Whenever I create a servitor now, the last element of the initial creation process for me, is to voice (and strongly mean) the benediction Optimus Prime gave, when he asked Vector Sigma to create the Aerialbots.

"Give this being a personality worthy of She who created me. Let them think for themselves, to grow in knowledge and wisdom, and let them always value freedom and life--wherever they find it."
