Excuse my seven levels of lame ignorance, but what is the curse of chains? it's a phrase I've heard a few times over the last while, but havent been able to get a straight answer. Thanks a lot:)

Chains, fire, and darkness characterize the conditions of the damned.

The chains imply restriction, the fire is anguish, and the darkness is uncertainty and emptiness.

Obstinate spirits, and those who betray you, are given these three curses. The first curse, called the Chain Curse or "General Curse Against Spirits That Rebell" is accomplished by preparing a box of black wood filled with sulphur and assafoetida along with the seal of the spirit, with a chain wrapped around the box and the curse spoken. The second curse requires a small fire, over which the chained box is held on the blade of the sword. The third or Greater Curse binds the spirit by depriving it of celestial lights, and condemning it to suffer, and involves setting the box and its contents on the fire itself.

Yup! I used lead to form the box (I also used iron). If you read the Lemegeton it should give you a description of the box and its contents (sulfur, asafoetida and the recalcitrant spirits sigil) and the curse(s)...Its all there in B&W!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/flame.gif)

Can you tell me, bym...Hypothetically, in the case of a residential haunting...if you evoked the spirit that was causing problems there, and could either determine a sigil for it or had an old photo of the deceased person in question, and put that in the box, what effect would burning that have? Would it be the same as the Greater Curse, except applied to that spirit?

I'm wondering if these curses could be adapted for use against ghosts, is all.

Dear 'Petrus,'

This would most unwise, if I may say.

If you do not correctly identify the spirit you WILL run into some MAJOR problems if you attempt to 'evoke' it. In fact, you will be 'provoking it' and have TWO beings to deal with at the SAME TIME! Do not even consider doing this unless you know what you're doing--this is nothing short of dangerous. Also, the last thing on earth you'll want to do is rely on some 'made up ritual' by you to cast a ghost out of the home and worst use a part of the Grimoires out-of-sync with its original purpose. If you start 'mixing' systems you'll see what results will come about--none at all or things will just worsten.

Yes, what I am telling you is that in order for the "Curse of Chains" to bind a spirit, you will have to have to be in FULL CONTROL of that spirit, and what that means is that you will have to perform an evocation to physical manifestation CORRECTLY and without the influence of your 'feel-good" emotions or this new age garbage that will produce NOTHING! You do it right or wrong. That's it.

I would consult a Catholic priest to come in and bless the house FIRST, then keep in touch with him making sure that the problem has been eliminated. An exorcism may need to be performed and permission sought by the bishop of that particular diocese.

Most Sincerely,

Mr. Curi

This is somewhat contradictory isn't it? The whole reason one would use that curse of chains is either because it's not showing up at all, or it didn't do what you wanted it to do. So in either case, you're not in control are you?

As far as I'm aware the curses in the goetia, namley The spirits chain (general curse or in some codices the lesser curse), conjuration of fire and the Greater curse, ( where the box with seal is placed into the fire), are perculier to the goetia. I believe its part of the covenant/pact the spirits are bound to, and its unlikely to have any effect on other spirits in the same way as in the goetia. Certainly doubtful on spirits responsible for hauntings, or poltergeist activity unless its a goetic (unlikely).

By the way good point Altpath.

I agree with 'Loki' on this point. In order for the 'Curse of Chains' to be effective, it will work properly ONLY if it is used in accordance with the guidelines from the Grimoire from which one is working. If this "Curse" was not meant for hauntings or poltergeist activity let it be! It was meant and fashioned for a high act of Ceremonial Magic and NOTHING else. It is possible that one may encounter further problems if these prayers are tampered with inappropriately, or not correctly. OBEY THE RULES.

'Alt path' I failed to rightly describe this the first time round so now I am faced with the exact same question again--and fair enough. I am speaking of a different kind of 'control' here. I suggest that since the charge to the spirit was 'imperfect' that one move on to the lisence to depart IF full manifestation has not been achieved. The 'reasons' for why the spirit has not appeared are indeed numerous. You see, one must be in complete control of the operation FIRST in order to be in control of the spirit. If the former is not achieved, there will be consequences the operator will have to face. The curse of chains will work, however if the spirit is being 'stubborn' (but I'd never bank that this is the reason why and would rather be 'safe' and blame myself for the failed appearance and vision of the spirit--due to shortcuts in preparation, poor charge and so on than to continue on with doubt). Then I'd sort out my variables and try another time. I hope this helps.

Most SIncerely,

Mr. Curi
