Hello everyone, does anyone know any good starting points for learning Necromancy?

I've been researching the topic for a while and I would really like to gain some first hand knowledge. My problem is that the more I read, the more daunting the prospect becomes. Not only do I have to wade through countless pages of RPG nonsense, but when I do come across some genuine information, it seems everyone has their own interpretation of what necromancy actually is and what is involved in its practice. I understand that every practitioner is an individual and so is likely to have their own opinions of the art based on their own experiences but isn't there a 'common ground' if you will, some basic exercises to atleast get me started so I can begin to form my own ideas and enjoy the art for what it can offer?

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Necromancy is a very, very, very, very, very broad art. I personally learned a really strange derivative of the arts that coincidentally studied a bit about death and dying.

What exactly do you want to do? Raise the dead? Talk to the dead? Be one with the state of death? What is your goal.

All of the above. I want to understand death. Why do we die? What happens when we do die? Can we prepare for and ultimately change our ethereal existance once we do die? These are some of the questions I would like to find an answer to and so far I'm unable to find satisfactory answers elsewhere.

I have tried to study this topic a bit myself and it is frustrating as hell dealing with RPG video games. But Necromancy is about communicating with the dead or summoning them. If you are interested in this topic and are open to learning about things in the same essence i would reccomend studying up on some things such as meditating and communicating with astral beings through the art of Astral Projection and walking into the higher realms to possibly speaking with those who have passed as well as gods/godesses. This is just a suggestion on my part i hope you find what you are looking for. Good Luck!

Peace!

I totally understand where you're coming from--it's so frustrating when your Google-fu fails.

Another thing I'd look into would be Spiritualism. There's a lot of crap out there regarding this subject, Sturgeon's Law is a bit truer here than usual, but a good chunk of Spiritualism is *all about* talking with the dead. In ancient times it *would* have been considered necromancy. If you can separate the crap from the jewels you'll be OK.

For the questions you're looking for answer I think come with time. Generally, those answers aren't going to be completely rational. Most of them will require some faith towards some higher entity before you actually get there.

To put it simply. To look beyond the biological functions of death, you're going to need to use faith/and or intuition. The vehicle of rational thought ends where our five senses stop.

Honestly, seek 'the source.' Yes, that would be a synonym to 'god', except the judeo christian connotations of that make it silly to use, but from there, all of the answers fall together. Really.

Nagash is one of my favorite characters of all time, let alone in Warhammer.

I have some sort-of rare e-books on Greek & Roman and Egyptian necromancy, if you are interested. They are mostly about speaking to the dead... too bad we cannot raise undead legions like the Great Necromancer, eh? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I don't know about anyone else but I would be interested. The only book I ever found in the topic was Greek and Roman Necromancy by Daniel Ogden.

Cosmic consciousness is devoid of diversity; yet the universe of diversity exists in notion....
We contemplate that reality in which everything exists, to which everything belongs,
from which everything has emerged, which is the cause of everything and which is everything....
The light of [this] self-knowledge alone illumines all experiences. It shines by its own light.
This inner light appears to be outside and to illumine external objects.

try and get into energy workings as well. Necromancy is also the transfering of energy from living things to another source, draining ones energy if you will, in order to use it for another purpose.

Spend some time in deep contemplation. Not quite meditation, but a state of mind marked by heavy concentration of contemplative thought within a matrix of meditative state of mind. Within, consider the world in a view of thanatopsis.

NOTE: You will not get the answers right away, but you will be pointed in the right direction of where to find your answers. You will be reminded of bookstores, books, and names of authors and psychologists as you meditate. These are the starting points of the answers you seek.

PROTIP: Once you gather information from sources that have been inspired to you from the above method, meditate again and try to figure out what makes sense to you!
