In recent months, I’ve experienced some associated difficulty in accessing my ability to discern the emotional conditions of others in my immediate surroundings. It seems that whenever I willfully expand my consciousness beyond my physical being, to sample the array of sentiment in my environment, I am left with one of two possible eventualities: (1.) a painful headache largely encompassing the right hemisphere of my skull, or (2.) a mental “fog” if you will that inhibits my cognitive ability to varying degrees. Moreover, the pain remains with me for a substantial amount of time—as does the fog.

The complications listed above periodically occur with other forms of extra-physical sensory. If I try to employ what little clairvoyant ability I’ve developed, for instance, the pain or fog may insinuate themselves according to whatever sporadic schedule these ailments abide by. They are not as consistent as they tend to be with my emotional sensory ability, but they are troubling nonetheless.

I fear that if I do not resolve these issues soon, I’ll be completely dissuaded to continue down the metaphysical paths that I’ve chosen which would result in a serious impediment to my spiritual growth. For assistance, I turn to those of you within this community with greater levels of expertise than myself. What prompts these symptoms to occur? Am I accessing my sensory capabilities incorrectly, inflicting self-harm in my ignorance? Are my senses touching upon malignant energies which ultimately manifest as physical discomfort, or is it the result of another explanation that I have not yet touched upon?

Exactly how are you expanding your councsiousness? If we know this it would be much easier to tell you what might be wrong. If anything. Firstly I'd make sure your symptoms are directly linked to whatever you're doing and not because of something else. If you "expand your counsciousness" then 6 hours later get head aches they probably are not caused by whatever you are doing.

Keep a good diet, don't drink or smoke, and get plenty of physical exercise on a regular basis.

Sounds to me like your technical ability exceeds the integrity of the structure of your subtle body. I used to get headaches sometimes a few years ago when i was first starting to get a little success with astral projection. I think I more recently have experienced the 'fog' you mentioned - I chalked it up to the changing back and forth of awareness that tends to confuse the mind. When you bring yourself 'back' from the extension, try focusing on your body, feeling your pulse in your chest and limbs, and maybe even grounding before moving on with your life.

After a while, these symptoms normally are resolved naturally. It takes time for your subtle body and by extension your physical vehicle to become accustomed to the energetic movements you're inciting by doing these things.

That's my two cents.

peace
Brian

I expand my consciousness in the only way that I (as a primarily self-taught pupil) know how: through an expenditure of will. When I wish to perceive the emotional states of others, or expose myself to whatever energies are responsible for clairvoyant episodes, I simply “push” my awareness beyond my physical body until I begin to receive stimuli from sources external to myself. The entire process itself requires, at most, 30 seconds to complete; and, from a more qualitative perspective, it feels akin to weakening the tether that exists between my less tangible self and my material form.

“…then six hours later get headaches they probably are not caused by whatever you are doing.” As I mentioned in my initial post, I’ve been afflicted with this ailment for a number of months now, and within that period I’ve been allotted plenty of time to make certain that my headaches/mental fogs are directly linked to my actions. These symptoms occur at no other instances in my day to day life.

My diet isn’t exactly a sterling example of proper consumption, but I’ve never touched a cigarette or alcohol (even socially) in my life. Perhaps my issue can be resolved by devoting more attention to the former, tough—my diet. I’ll work on improving my eating habits and I’ll monitor any results from doing so.

Alternatively, Brian, if you don’t mind, would you expound upon the nature of the subtle body and its relation to the practices that I’ve partaken in? How long, on average, does it take the material body to reconcile with the changing energy harmonics of the subtle body?

Headaches are sometimes a sign of a blocked chakra. If you have a blockage in your 3rd eye chakra, it will cause headaches when you attempt ESP. There are folks who specialize in energy balance and clearing of chakras. Try that.

I got some headaches and bodyaches for about a year or so, and practiced every single day. So, in my case, a year. In that period, I also started doing martial arts again, to keep my body working out. I only recently became vegetarian, but at the time I cut red meat out of my diet almost all together, and cut soda, candy, etc., almost out of my diet all together as well.

Like Makevelli suggested, you could see an energy healer, but in my experience with those people it's really a craps shoot as to whether you're going to find someone who actually knows what they're doing. Anyone can claim to be an energy healer and start advertising, and all they have to do with anyone who disputes their claim is just babble a bunch of stuff about chakras they read from a book. Much better to learn to work with your own energy system. I have only met one person who claimed to be an energy healer who was actually able to cause a change in my system. And I have met dozens who claimed to be the real deal.

Get some sort of vitamin supplement. I take centrum performance. Your body really does need all those compounds, believe it or not.

Greetings!
I hope that you don't mind me adding abit to this thread. Sometimes, when we embark upon our various paths to whatever goal we're seeking, we experiment with basic technique(s) of meditation, trance and breathing. Without a guide (or some objective overseer) to point out certain things, we end by accumulating what can be brutally called 'bad form'. As being self-taught I have noted this down-the-line as it were, with myself. A simple example can be as trifling as incorrect breathing or even an 'emotive-anticipatory blood pressure increase'. Pardon my lack of articulation. I've found when I was trying 'real hard' to do something I 'tensed up' unconciously, causing my blood pressure to rise... This caused nose bleeds, headaches, tremors, twitches, sparkly lights and dizziness. I was doing things incorrectly (or not marketing the technique for jaded burnouts for 'kicks'! LOL!). I got results other than this panoply of infirmities, but that only served to cement my intrinsically flawed technique. There will be some things that can omly be reproduced under stress conditions...though I still feel that with a more suitable guide/technique alot of aggravation can be circumvented.
It could be an energy block, it could be physical tension. My rule of thumb is to rule out the normal, everyday junk and if that doesn't reveal the culprit you start getting more esoteric. I apologize for the soap box and hot air but I was hoping for a balloon back to Kansas (IMG:style_emoticons/default/witch.gif) !

If you haven't all ready, try going for a period of time without expanding your mind and see if you notice a difference. I understand that you may believe it only takes 30 seconds for results but try to make it last longer; go slower. Like maybe try taking 5 minutes. I'd be willing to bet that its combination of the things mentioned - poor diet, proper excersice and technique lead to energy blocks. So maybe try to takea longer amount of time performing your technique and sorta run a self diagnostic - consider your blood pressure and heart rate, as well as breathing. See if you can notice any kind of emotional changes and recognize if their source is from within you or outside you. Basically look for any disturbances. Slowing the actual practice down from 30 seconds to even a mintute could give the information you are looking for.

Just some other health related thoughts - sleep, get plenty but not too much, either can have similar affects. And avoid high amounts of stimulants. When I used to drink coffee by the pot full by the end of the day I'd essentially crash, as well as disrupt my regular sleep. This resulted in fatigue and head aches as well as muscle spasms and higher anxiety levels.

As far as seeing a healer I'd try to heal yourself first before you put yourself out to somebody who may or may not be real. If you do all the things necessary to live a healthy life, remember health is on three levels - mind, body and spirit, then any energy blockages should clear up on their own.

In somewhat psychological terms, my psych teacher would shoot me for trying to equate occultism to science, what you're doing is a kind of dissociation. If you don't already know is basically the conscious and/or sub-conscious mind seperating itself from a given state of being. In its extreme form the mind does it to escape trauma. People with with multiple personallity disorder suffer from a dissociative disorder. You've probably heard about various cases where people who were raped felt they left their body during the attack. Same for people are abused in other ways. Lesser forms of dissociation are like feeling test or date anxiety and taking a step back from the situation to collect and calm yourself. Mediation is a form of dissociation. In order to expand your mind and sense whats beyond yourself you seperate your mind from your present state of being to feel whats outside of yourself. This alone can cause headaches. It may simply be a reaction to the technique. There might not be anything unhealthy about yourself. Your brain, in its infanitly complex neurological matrix, may just generate headaches.

To me, from my "mystical" stand point, these headaches imply that you are not properly grounding yourself after you complete your excercise.

Hi there, this is my first post on here.

I'm not far into magical training(Hermetic) and therefore can't give any specific instructive techniques in altering your situation. However, from what I understand, it sounds very much like your out of equilibrium due to one-sided training. Are you simultaneously training body, mind & spirit -or is one or more lagging behind the others?

Just a thought.

Selah.
