(IMG:style_emoticons/default/butcher.gif) i find that using no light and having one quiet noise that blocks all others out will help you relaxe. i meditated for more than an hour like that.

Greetings!
Yup, that sounds like it might do the trick! Later, as you get used to your method, you might try to do away with the background noise and either try to 'filter' out the ambient noise with focusing your mind or expand your hearing ability to go farther than normal...just some suggestions! Good luck! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I think it depends on that type of meditation you are
trying to do.

If you want to do a buddhist type meditation where you
clear your mind then you arent really doing yourself any
favors by turning off the lights, closing your eyes, and
putting white noise in the background.

Zazen is best accomplished by making no special effort
to alter your surroundings, simply find a peaceful area, sit
down, keep your back strait, and leave your eyes half open.

Then allow your mind to become calm naturally, like a
pool of clean still water. When thoughts of the day rise up,
allow them to pass by and allow your mind to become calm
once again. If you hear a noise, allow it to pass by and
allow your mind to reach calm once again. Your goal is to
be completely aware at all times yet focus your mind on nothing.

Actually.. the one thing you can safely focus on is your
breathing, but that is the only thing. Stay aware of your
surroundings at all times, dont allow your mind to wander,
and if it does, you must bring it back to the here and now.

Just make sure you dont fall asleep. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleeping_.gif)

Of course.. maybe thats not your bag, and you are looking for
more of a guided OBE type meditation.

But I highly recomend Zazen!

My suggestion would be to first chant holy words such as 'om' for about 5 minutes. After this, breathing & relaxation exercises can be done for some time. Then sit in a quiet place with spine erect. Concentrate on mid-point between eye-brows for some time. Now carry on with whatever meditation that suits your individual constitution-temperament.

I found a way many years ago that brutally beats all meditation techniques focusing on quieting or stilling your mind: I simply hold back my thoughts like I would hold my breath.

It never fails me, and I can do it for hours without a single thought present in my altered awareness.

If I have sat like this for long, and decide to start thinking, it usually ends in a cry of laughter. Obviously, I have raised my energy.

Daily, ritualized prayer in and of itself is a wonderful meditation. Just ask Hassids and Qabbalists world-wide!

There are two methods of meditation I employ on a need-based schedule. The first is designed for separating my ka from my body. Through this method, I hope to walk the Necropolis freely when I will. It's also the method I use when being tutored by Wepwawet. The second method I've lifted from fiction in true chaote fashion. It's simply the "flame and the void" meditation from Robert Jordan's WoT series. I use this one for thaumaturgic work (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

It has worked for me, it may work for you. Sit cross-legged on a mat before a large-sized mirror. See in the mirror reflection of your mid-point between the eye-brows. Gaze at it. Concentrate on it. Eventually light will burst forth.

Funny, for me everything turns black when I do that.

Greetings!
Here's an interesting 'meditation' that I came across decades ago. We used it like a parlor trick. Try it and let me know what you think...(it's fun)

You'll need a mirror and a low wattage red light bulb.

Hookup a lamp with the red light bulb. The light should be above you but this isn't critical. Place a mirror in front of you. Get comfy...make sure that there will be no other light source on at the time of the meditation save the red lamp. Breathe easily, staring at the third eye area of your face in the mirror. Relax. Make sure you can't see the red lamp in the mirror...only your red visaged face. (you can have music playing if you want...) Staring at your 3rd eye take note of any feature changes that occur on/over your face,

This was supposed to reveal to you past incarnations...I found it rather entertaining. Especially when the visage turned non human! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

This is supposed to be fun!, though working with various light wavelengths (colors) can produce some very interesting results. Boo! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/00000037.gif)

It would be interesting to see the results of this meditation as performed by therianthropes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

LOL! Exactly! I'm sure some more scholarly approaches couldn't hoight!
Shapeshifting and Atavistic Resurgence (ala Spare) would be most interesting! And its such a simple method, *sigh* (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
