I think it depends on that type of meditation you are
trying to do.
If you want to do a buddhist type meditation where you
clear your mind then you arent really doing yourself any
favors by turning off the lights, closing your eyes, and
putting white noise in the background.
Zazen is best accomplished by making no special effort
to alter your surroundings, simply find a peaceful area, sit
down, keep your back strait, and leave your eyes half open.
Then allow your mind to become calm naturally, like a
pool of clean still water. When thoughts of the day rise up,
allow them to pass by and allow your mind to become calm
once again. If you hear a noise, allow it to pass by and
allow your mind to reach calm once again. Your goal is to
be completely aware at all times yet focus your mind on nothing.
Actually.. the one thing you can safely focus on is your
breathing, but that is the only thing. Stay aware of your
surroundings at all times, dont allow your mind to wander,
and if it does, you must bring it back to the here and now.
Just make sure you dont fall asleep. (IMG:

Of course.. maybe thats not your bag, and you are looking for
more of a guided OBE type meditation.
But I highly recomend Zazen!
