The Target Options

Say someone was going to call up an elemental to do a task for someone, do you think that person's cell phone number, name, and address written on a piece of paper would be an applicable connection if placed in the triangle with the being?

An interesting topic! The nature of "the Link" in Sympathetic Magic, etc. I have a few questions that should be mulled over...
1. Why summon an elemental? (No...I'm serious, this isn't aimed at being flippant with the enquiry)
2. What kind of elemental?
I guess that my questions are pointed at the need for you to provide the 'link' to the subject. Why not just instruct the elemental to the task at hand? Giving an elemental a cell phone number may have some amusing results...the ringer going off at the approach of the elemental, the shorting out of the device or worse yet, the complete malfunctioning of said piece of equipment.
When you call the elemental to do this task it will be you that will provide the target...from your mind. Providing a name and address is not enough, you must give particulars or, at least, a good picture of the target. The 'link' with the target must be compatible with the elemental involved. What would an earth elemental do with a cell phone number? Now a fire or , better yet, an electrical elemental would be better suited to understanding the use of an electrical device...this still doesn't mean that they can/would understand a series of numbers. On top of all this, what is the task you needed it to perform? Different elementals, different tasks.
Well, perhaps our members will have some good advice for you rather than my old ramblings...I like the gist of your question! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Maybe another discussion as to why we need to have a 'link' within the use of certain magics? Something to ponder...

Just had a huge laugh at the idea of a cell phone laying on a table being thoroughly soaked by a water elemental!

Elementals are stupid creatures (like fish or deer), they are not really that capable except for providing the needed and must have detailed information to perform even that task, and they may still return only seeming to have performed the task you set them. I wouldn't send a bass to do the job of 'flipper'.

As far as a cell phone number being 'proper form', it seems to be pushing it, and none of the creatures we can command have much technological savvy.

I guess you are right. I was going to ask this question on the goetic list. Would the goetic entity be able to make use of the phone number and address as a target, but since I was going to work with elementals first(before attempting goetic beings) I thought I might ask it here.

Though perhaps if I wrote a letter to the sintended person and told that the elemental was to follow the letter to the home of the person and then do its job.. That might be better, yeah?

True, however this person isn't a magician at all, nor is it an attack persay...

More like persuasion...Beneficial persuasion for that person.
