For a book written by someone with no background or previous experience with the magical community, I was very impressed with this work. Its one of the first outside pieces I've seen to really take a look at magical groups and individuals beyond Wicca - in fact, Wicker even mentions the "fluffy" criticisms that other magicians have of Wiccans.

The style of the book is sort of an Alice in Wonderland tour, with Wicker encountering many different types of people and groups that claim identies and/or powers that most people would say are fantasy. What I really liked about it is that the author maintained an open-mind as well as a healthy skepticism amongst her encounters with those labeled as "weirdos", and was unexpectedly surprised and delighted with what she found. Wicker puts forth a fairly objective evaluation through the lens of a sociological and religious reporter on why magic appeals to people as a lifestyle and paradigm and what it offers to society. She also complements this by sharing her personal feelings and experience and attempting to translate and interpret them through a magical worldview. She hits upon some very insightful observations about the value of looking at the world through magical eyes and the power of adding a magical touch to the things in one's life.

I would recommend this book to non-magicians, beginners, and experienced magicians. Its very enjoyable both for the humorous and unusual situations Wicker finds herself in and the wisdom she takes from it.
