Source: from SM library's "Spell Books" section: Aji-ajian - Indonesian rare spells I've collected over the years. the translation from Indonesian to english are mine, so pls pardon the grammar and errors.

In magical art of Kejawen, fasting periods vary greatly from one day to 30 days, some spells/ajian requires longer period of regular fasting disciplines which can go on for months and even years. Fasting usually begins from dawn to sunset. Some spells/ajian requires a non stop fasting (without sleep) from a whole day (24 hours) to up to 7 days, in meditation of the intend of what the magician intend to achieve.

Different types of fasting according to Javanese art of Kejawen:

Simple Fasting: no food or drink and refrain from evil doing.
Ngrowot : vegetable based food diet during fasting.
Mutih : Food diets based on white rice with plain water without sugar nor salt.
Ngebleng : Fasting without any food nor water(without a break/allowed to exit during fasting/toilet) in a room.
Pati geni : Fasting without food nor water in a dark room (without a break/allowed to exit during fasting)
Ngalong : Food diet based only fruits during fasting period.
Ngidang : Food diet of leafs only - must be eaten using mouth with hands firmly tied behind at all times.
Nglowong : No food, no drink, no sleep however you're allowed to wonder around/travel.
Ngepel : Food diet portion of the size of one's fist (usually a fistful of white rice).
Ngasrep : Cold food and drinks only. No salt, sugar nor spice.
Mendem (ngluweng) : Meditation under earth (inside dugged hole) no food/drink.
Nguda-uda : Cutting back food/water consumptions, promote kindness, and offer daily praise and worship to God.

One translation of a kejawen spell:
AJI BRAJAMUSTI (Brajamusti Spell)
In the ancient times, Aji Brajamusti are known to be one of the top warrior's potent and reliable arsenal since this spell believed to be a powerful shield used in war. The very few person who acquired this spell successfuly were granted a physical and magical power only few can compete with. One function of Brajamusti spell were to imbue the body and hands with the power of invincibility. All kinds of weapons becomes impotent when used againts the spell owner.

To acquire Barajamusti spell (note: may be incomplete):
a. 7 days fasting every month for a period of one full year, or, 40 days fast for every one year.
b. During fasting, at a time of prayer - a mantra is to be recited for 41 or 100 times.
c. At the end of the day of fasting, recite the matra once then transfer breath to both hands. At those times the occult power within body will raise, flow freely and grow stronger.
d. Recite "ya qawiyyu ya matiin" 1000 times

Mantra of Aji Brajamusti:
”Bismillahirrohmanirrohiim, Sun matek aji ajiku Brajamusti, Terap-terap, Awe-awe, Kuru-kuru, Griya gunting drijiku, Watu item ing tanganku, Sun taj antem, Laa ilaaha ilalloh Muhammadur rasululloh."

note: spell above were originally Hindu - without the moslim conversion so the original version of the incantation may be written like this:
(God almightly) Sun matek aji ajiku Brajamusti, Terap-terap, Awe-awe, Kuru-kuru, Griya gunting drijiku, Watu item ing tanganku, Sun taj antem,(Great of thy Lord, power and glory - Muhammad prohet of God)

In your opinion, how does fasting work to benefit a magical working?

I don't know this for sure, but I have thought about it, and as in the chi excercises I describe elsewhere, and prior to an astral projection working, it is advised that the practitioner refrains from eating for about four hours prior to attempting these things.
This could be seen as a short term fast, maybe because the bodys energies are not being utilised in the processes of digesting food, distributing nutrients around the body, and assimilating them into the required areas, it can then concentrate the energies to be utilised towards whatever objective is desired.
Maybe food in the stomach or intestines could somehow interfere with the movement of the abdomen in breathing techniques
Whenever I've tried it though, I get distracted by the fact that I'm hungry as hell.
Same thing probably goes for abstinence from sexual activities, although sex without orgasm is supposed to generate a good amount of energy from what I've read.
I think I read somewhere that it's called karezza.(The sex bit, that is.)
This is the only way I've been able to make sense of it all so far. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/922.gif)

Karezza actually involves an ejaculation, but it goes backwards into the bladder from what I understand. Because of that, you do lose energy through your ejaculation. It is a mid-eastern technique. In the far east, India and China, there are training methods which allow you to hold off having an ejaculation at all. You can still have an orgasm, but it isn't an orgasm in the normal sense. You learn to circulate a heavier sort of energy as part of the training, pulling it up from the testicles. Accessing this other, more powerful energy, and combining it with your partner's energy, thus balancing the yin and yang, is what leads to the general boost of energy. There a few books on this out in stores, but the ones by Man Tak Chia and his wife are better than the others IMHO. They can explain it better than I can. I find it hard to find a woman who is good enough at energy work to be able to learn the whole system. It is difficult to do without a partner who is willing and able. Its actually a lot easier for the woman than the man. Obviously the man loses energy through ejaculation according to Chinese theory.. My old teacher called it losing male essence. I believe it is the same idea in India. He used to say that women lose their energy from eating chocolate chip cookies. Really though women lose energy during their periods.
I agree with our 'sick puppy' here about food interfering with proper breathing. (grin) But I believe there is something more to the idea that you ought to fast or stick to a vegetarian diet for a few days before any major work. I generally eat vegetarian and stay celebate for 3 days before doing anything big. I don't do anything more than that though. To me fasting isn't a major production. Perhaps there are benefits to prolonged fasting and the preparatory rituals, but it looks like too much trouble and I don't know that I could do my job properly if I was to do any major fasting. Maybe that is just an excuse though. I like my meals and snacks.

Don't worry. It'll only seem kinky the first time.

Thanks for clearing that up Goibniu. As you have probably noticed, my knowledge of this stuff is sketchy to say the least, but thanks to this site and the people on it, that is set to change.
By the way, I wrote a comment on your excellent lessons on Qigong, but I wrote it as a reply to the actual lesson and when I pressed the 'submit' button, it disappeared.
Looks like I need to learn more than breathing excercises (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hmm.gif)
Thanks again for your clarification. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/victory.gif) (Don't you just LOVE these emoticons?)
