Hi uchih
Circles can be used for protection or to focus energies. It really depends on the entities -- and more importantly, ON YOU. You do whatever gives you the most faith in the outcome. Since I work empty hand (and heavily influenced by Tantric Tibetan Buddhism) I never use circles (even though in Tibetan magick arts they honor the four kings of the four directions, the elements are all different (for example, earth is not north!) but I'm very comfortable with my own sacred space (so to speak). If you are working a specific style, it's always best to follow the proven methods first. If you've never encountered these entities, definitely a good idea to use the recommended methods (and it puts you in the right frame of mind, adding to the focus of your subconscious mind). But for me, I have total and utter (unwavering) confidence in my own empty-handed methods. (In my case, no circles, no tools, sometimes a tarot deck, that's about it). It works for me. But what works for you only you can decide (Take this all with a bucket of salt, because I'm a Chaote, so I use what works, then discard it the next time...) Circle is a very sacred shape in all traditions. Visualizing a circle is usually just fine, which allows you to make do in any size space. Confidence in your own abilities and the methods you're using is the true key.
