If you're lucky, it will happen how it's supposed to happen, in the time it's supposed to happen in. Magick is rarely instant when it's done well, despite most people's claims to the contrary. Just like making a decision too quickly, or forcing an issue before it's matured, magick that takes place 'instantaneously' is usually more superficial. Of course, that's just my experience.
You'll be able to tell when your intentions start to become realized. To truly let it run it's course, you should try and forget about having cast it in the first place. That's part of the purpose of a book of shadows, or magickal journal - you can commit the experience to paper, then forget about it so that it can run it's course unobstructed by the constant tug of your mind.
You're not doomed. While I personally believe it to be basically unethical to cast hexes on people, from the unified perspective of the Force (the unified consciousness, god, whatever) there is no good or evil, simply the movement of energy - action and reaction. All magick, not just 'negative' or 'black' magick, teaches lessons. Every act of magick comes attached to a lesson that is, in my opinion, the true cost of the spell that was cast. When you pay attention and see how the magick affects your life, and then deal with that change responsibly, you effectively accept the cost, and the magick reaches is peak effectiveness at that point. If you ignore the lesson, don't pay the cost, then the effects of the magick will be superficial and temporary, and you'll probably get a sort of causal backlash.
You're in that body, living that life, to learn, and learning is the only thing you're capable of by nature of that configuration. Magick is a tool for picking and choosing the lessons we want to learn. If you feel the need to hex someone, you probably want to learn about negotiating offense, forgiveness, something along those lines. Pay attention and act maturely as the magick runs it's course, and you'll be a better person afterwards; and whoever you put the hex on will maybe think twice about dealing with you next time. Beware of the stigma that may attach itself to you because of it though - go around hexing folk and maybe one day people will steer clear all together; the good and the bad. That's the sort of thing that may happen if you didn't learn the lesson you were asking for.
