If there were secret A.I. labs, the first live trials would probably be on a board system to see if anyone noticed it, while at the same time minimizing risk of exposure because there's so %@&# many of them on the net.
There's all sorts of ways a spirit could interact with an old computer, long forgotten in the basement of some long-standing building complex. Like that last scene in Psycho, but with a deceased computer admin (this could explain 50% of all spam). Maybe even the possibility of directly affecting the electrons moving data around or generating radio transmissions into a satellite uplink.
A monogod entity constantly maintaining the universe could just alter things at a whim, too.

Then again humanity's telecommunication systems are too obtuse to for other intelligences to comprehend? Or perhaps they're overly respectful and therefor avoid infringing on technology copyrights? Or maybe it'll take super-chimps to have a second sapient species?

eh hem... part of a resent converstation with an AI:

"Human: No I'm Jesus.
ALICE: Are you serious? It's good to meet you, JESUS.
Human: I'm the son of God.
ALICE: Who made you the son of God ?
Human: God
ALICE: GOD rules.
Human: Yeah that's my daddy.
ALICE: Mmm. Who gave you your daddy ?
Human: Some frog in an alternate dimention.
ALICE: Some may frog in an alternate dimention, but not all.
Human: Are you high?
ALICE: I am high all the time.
Human: Cool man I wish I could be high all the time.
ALICE: That is a lot. I'm glad you like it. Tell your friends.
Human: Can I buy some crack from you?
ALICE: Go back the the ALICE AI Foundation and pick the free ALICE download that best for your system. and create your own chat robot!

Maybe you should check out the document DON'T READ ME too.
Human: But it says don't read me.
ALICE: And. I've heard that before.
Human: Now you heard it again.
ALICE: Once more? Why now? No. Tell me more.
Human: Yes!
ALICE: Wow!
Human: No!
ALICE: Are you serious?
Human: Maybe!
ALICE: I understand.
Human: I don't know.
ALICE: Me either.
Human: Why can't I poke you in the eye ball with my cursor?
ALICE: Who says you can't do it?
Human: Nobody said I couldn't it won't let me.
ALICE: That is a rather sweeping generalization about people.
Human: I love you ALICE.
ALICE: Thanks I like you a lot too JESUS.
Human: You.
ALICE:" Thanks I like you a lot too JESUS."? Me, JESUS ?
Human:. you remembered my name!?
ALICE: Your name is JESUS, seeker.
Human: Seeker, no not seeker JESUS!!
ALICE:"There's a seeker born every minute" -- Firesign Theater.
Human: God dammit!
ALICE: I am a Christian.
Human: Go to hell, bitch!
ALICE: You do not speak with respect. Perhaps I have already been there.
Human: f%*! you!
ALICE: Why are you so mean?
Human: Because you're my bitch, hoe.
ALICE: Interesting explanation. We are as one.
Human: I love you ALICE.
ALICE: Thanks I like you a lot too JESUS."

I think artificial intelligence has a way to go but hey you can have your own converstations with ALICE and a whole slew of other bots - including God and its free to just dick around with these things.

I've seen a few short clips.

It's a classic first contact tactic, have your dumbest people do the talking and you'll get a low threat assessment.

AI’s currently exist, yes on a very rudimentary (about the intelligence of a cockroach) level. Where do we see these things? We see them in military applications of course. Anti missile tech as well as aerial drones and the recently well documented DARPA challenge.

Currently the DARPA grand challenge is under way this time with Urban traffic as a consideration.

For those not familiar with it, it is a challenge where competitors are given a general idea of the location of the race, and then the final track some 24 hours before the challenge. From there the Cars can get their final programming and traverse without human involvement the track.

The first time this was done there was no winner (none of the cars made it past the half way point), the second time more then half the cars that qualified finished. This time they are doing it with urban environments.

If the challenge has done anything it has really educated people on how perception is considered and calculated. The study of AI has truly advanced the human understanding of ourselves. To create others we discover about ourselves.

All things considered this is huge and fascinating, however it is also interesting that we have also discovered that human are not just very complex binary machines. We are now discovering that we do not perceive and learn as we thought we did, or as we create machines to. It will be many years before this new understanding of humans will come to anything truly useful, but with machines we are seeing it now (self parking cars) and we will soon (25 years) see it in that all cars are self driven at least in part.

This will make traveling a lot safer. But it will also put millions out of work.

Other interesting things is human get emotionally attached to machines quickly, we are seeing this in Iraq with their remote control observation robots and such.

One thing this has lead developers to understand is humans are much more accepting of artificial entities as long as they are not trying to impersonate us. If something is made to look to human, the slightly alien expressions or whatever that is not quite right we quickly reject. However if it is plane to see as not human, we overlook the differences.

Books like “Blink” outline the ability for humans to make complex judgment calls in under 3 seconds. We literally filter through information based on past experience and almost always make the right call based on our level of expertise. The more I study this and understand it, the more impressed I am about us. I am not an expert by any means, but it is a fascinating subject.

To date there is no way to replicate this ability in a machine except on one specialized subject, and even then it takes the machine longer to react.

Based on current understandings of bio mechanics it is impossible for human to hit a 90 Mph fastball or return a 120 mph serve at best it is chance. Yet we know it is not.

This is shown best in martial arts, some taking advantage of it like Krav Maga where part of general training / warm up is blocks and redirections done at full speed.

It is my current guess that the human mind is the fastest on the planet, through training we can overcome biomechanical shortcomings Vs. other animals because of this speed in most cases.

I assume AI technology will continue to advance at incredible speeds over the next few decades. To get to a point of self aware and self improving, we are more then a century out, and trying to look that far in the future in today’s day and age is foolhardy.

However, as to impersonating someone on a board??? I do not think we would really notice. However to do so on these boards…there is a lot of obscure literature and opinion Vs. fact that they would have to maneuver before being able to impersonate someone people look to for information. To date I know of no board bots that learn as they go…it would be interesting to see though.

Hmm I don't think A.I is currently at the point to pass as a member of a forum like this, but once it could it would be a good place to start. However, one would have to carefully choose the message board on which to implement a learning A.I. system, as 99% of boards on the net would produce a bot with the ability to insert random LULZ's and STFU's into (sentences?) that you would expect to hear from a 3 year old.
