Question About Hindu Purification Options

I was wondering what purification methods do the hindus use? Can anyone describe to me the process or send me a link to a website where I can read up on this? I can't seem to find anything about it on the internet. Thanks all in advance.

I am Hindu, but I admit I don't know that much about my own religion.
Before I go to religious gatherings, I make sure I am clean-so I have a shower head to toe, don't eat meat for the day or drink any alcohol.
This is what I've been taught so it may actually just be considered cultural.

depends on what the purification is for..usually a spoon or two of tumeric added to a pail of water,mix it up..have your normal shower and after your normal shower,take a handful of the tumeric water in your palms saying "Aum Gham Ghanabathee Namahe"..Do it three times and then pour the pail of tumeric water over yourself..Usually done before rituals...
