There is a certain part of the population who would gleefully jump at the chance to be housed like a dog, clothed in a sack, and fed gruel for the sake of avoiding the conventional modern lifestyle. They want a life without paperwork: no taxes, no registrations and fees, no scores or balances. They will endure endless monotony and painful toil (stuffing envelopes and digging ditches) just to avoid the tedium of the Collar.
Maybe there is some benefit to living like a monk, if pursued with purpose, but usually I see these people as looking for an escape from responsibility.
If you want to support yourself directly with magic, the best thing to do is to get a land-line phone and join PRN as a diviner. Some PRN affiliates allow any sort of divination (the best-paid are Astrologers and Numerologists), but Telephone Tarot is a stable income of $15 per hour. You can also make more money, especially if you listen to tips from the high-priority members on the service. Most of the readers are sincere in any professional service, even if the late-night ads are campy.
I do not recommend casting spells "for hire" for three reasons. First, it is such a common fraud scheme that you will appear to be nothing more than another scam artist. Second, there are legal obstacles and expenses. Third, if you can do something good for another person with spells, you can do something good for yourself.
Pick something that you like to do, and apply magic toward that interest as a way to make money. There are a lot of things that need to come together to "be a musician" or an artist or some other thing, and your spells and charms can probably round-off the rough edges of those pursuits. If nothing else, magic should facilitate the accomplishment of your true goals in life insofar as you are willing to attain them.
