Energy in psychic terms is the rough scientific equivalent to "attitude". You can't use energy to run a car or light a lightbulb, but it relates to your general spryness, your ability to move and think and act. You still need the energy from food to do all that, but the energy aka motivation within you will actually use the energy in food. So to avoid confusion, when I'm talking about energy like, "She's so full of energy today!" I call it attitude, or ki/chi/qi/englishspellingofchinesethingy. The English word "energy" is too confusing with two wildly different meanings, so I only use it for the official meaning, which is vaguely equivalent to "stuff".
Ki work is most simply the practice of raising your level of motivation and improving your attitude. As you succeed in it, you'll be able to do more and think more clearly, and you will feel better about yourself. In the exercises where you project your sense of self outside your body, you will increase your awareness of the outside world, and your feeling of connection with it. If you have problems with ki, you'll be prone to stilted thoughts, weakening resolve, poor health and self sabatoge. Some people are more specific than the general "ki" dividing it up into the different attitudes and motivations, like the 7 chakras, or the Chinese acupuncture stuff. Or Maslow, however you like to think of him.
