Talismans – Basic procedure with further reading

A talisman is a representation of a force; it requires careful consideration and construction to make sure that you are attracting the force you need for your purpose. It is like a physical map of your intention.

A talisman is normally made from a natural material such as, wood, bone, ivory, horn, metal and occasionally stone.

You will need to think about the material, shape and colour of your talisman, then what will be on it in terms of symbol/sigil depending on what you intend to use if for.

The symbols can come from planets, elements, names, spirits, gods, magickal words, astrological symbols and so on.

When you are sure that your talisman has the relevant attractions for the task, you can then consecrate and charge it with a suitable energy like elemental energy, planetary energy or another representative force. The timing of your working will depend upon the influence of the planet or energy you are aligning it with.

Charging a Talisman

Having described what a talisman is and the practicalities of making one, we will now look at them from a magickal point of view.

Talismans are a map of something you wish to achieve, whilst creating them you should be focussing on your intended purpose for them; this will take in your own energy, but you can also draw in energies from elements, planets and other forces to reinforce the tasks of the symbology you have chosen; in actual fact, if you have an entity that is closely aligned to your reason for the talisman, you can ask for help with the charging.

If you are unable to make your own talisman for any reason, one can be bought, but will need strong charging since the making of it will not have been under your conditions with your personal power going into it at every stage and may not work as well, like a battery it will need to be charged.

The basic charging outline takes this form:

Prepare and cleanse yourself (wear cotton gloves for handling your talisman or use a cloth)
Put your talisman in the place of consecration and charging
Cleanse it with a sprinkling of water and words of your choosing
Consecrate it with incense or other burning material again with words of your choice
Standing in the appropriate direction, use an invoking ritual of power – if you are wanting to employ the energy of air for instance, you will face that elements direction.
Proclaim your purpose and discharge your energy into the talisman and visualize the talisman accepting it and becoming ‘alive’.
Next, attract the forces for the symbology you have used in your own words where possible.

Having constructed your talisman, and charged it, you may want to put a time limit on its effectiveness to avoid magickal accidents such as another magickian getting hold of it and tampering with it, also, your needs may change over time. You may also need to actually destroy the talisman after its useful life.

Note: as with most workings, you will want to banish before and after the construction and charging of your talisman. You will also want to make sure that no-one else can get hold of it.

NB: these are introductory notes on talismans and for a more complete understanding you should avail yourselves of the further reading as listed in the previous post.

Consecration of Talismans

A version by David Rankine

When you have made your talisman, you need to consecrate it. You will need the following ingredients:

• The talisman
• An appropriately coloured piece of silk big enough to wrap it in
• A bowl of salt
• A bowl of water
• Some incense or joss
• Almond oil

The procedure is as follows:
Having worked out the time for your ritual beforehand and created your talisman, place it on a piece of appropriately (to the planet) coloured silk and visualize a sphere of luminous energy (of the appropriate colour for the sphere) about 20cm in diameter in the air over the talisman.

1. State the intent of the talisman in a single, concise sentence (that you have prepared beforehand).

2. Sprinkle the talisman with salt, as you do this, say “I consecrate this talisman with the power of Earth that it may (repeat intent).”

3. Sprinkle the talisman with water, as you do this, say “I consecrate this talisman with the power of Water that it may (repeat intent).”

4. Pass the talisman through the incense or joss the appropriate (to the planet) number of times, as you do this, say “I consecrate this talisman with the power of Fire that it may (repeat intent).”

5. Breathe upon the talisman the appropriate (to the planet) number of times, as you do this, say “I consecrate this talisman with the power of Air that it may (repeat intent).”

6. As you have performed the previous 4 steps with the elements, for each step you should have visualized the ball becoming smaller, brighter and more intense in colour, as the energy grew stronger. Ideally it should have reduced about 4cm in diameter each time – to 16cm, then 12cm, then 8cm, then 4cm after you have breathed on the talisman.

7. Anoint the talisman with a drop of almond oil, saying “I consecrate this talisman with the power of Spirit that it may (repeat intent).” See the sphere shrink further, so it is now a tiny sphere about 1cm in diameter of intense energy, almost too bright to look at.

8. Then put a drop of your saliva on the talisman, linking it to your energies, and see the sphere of energy descend into your talisman as you say “I join this talisman to my life, that the (repeat intent).”

9. Wrap the talisman in the silk and put it in a safe place.

This is copyright material and is taken from David Rankine’s forthcoming book called Climbing the Tree of Life. I have verbal permission to post this on Sacred Magick forums.

Hello Radiant,

I would like to say that this is a great post on talisman construction and consecration. These are methods that I used early on before I became heavily involved in Hermeticism and the Golden Dawn...heh, them good ol' low magic days! I like this simple, but very effective outline....I only modify it a bit now,...(using the SIRP, BRH and other banishings and purifications ect.) But yea, just letting you know this is great even for people that perform complex rituals beforehand such as the Bornless, I like these simpler outlines for when Im on the road with limited resources and limited time, space ect. Fast, Clean, Effective and Affordable!
