Huh. I'm surprised no one tackled this one. This thread was started on my birthday, though, so I'll give it a nudge just to have the information here. No doubt you've gone and researched yourself by now - at least, I'd hope so.
Your teacher makes a good comparison - the matrix in the matrix. The basic idea behind a morphogenic field is that there is an essentially 'electromagnetic' field (which is typically the kind of field they assign to any field phenomenon either until they figure out what kind of field it is, or when they work under that assumption that all fields are essentially electromagnetic. Curvatures in spacetime are another theory, but we'll keep it simple here) into which an organism grows, which is thought to be responsible for the propagation of cell growth into a specific form. It stems from a belief that the various intricacies of biological structure cannot be built according to a genetic code alone, and that there must be a structural component, a subtle framework, if you will, for an organism onto which the genetic code then propagates cell growth, being itself more responsible for the communication between cells, the proportion of cells, specific chemical markers, etc.; and therefore more responsive rather than responsible, to the morphogenic field.
Under this premise, it is believed that your physical form, or that of any organism, is basically predetermined - which is not really disprovable as yet, and so has not been granted much serious attention in the 'classical' scientific community. However, research into EMF phenomena is a growing field of science so maybe we'll see something interesting in the near future.
To take the idea itself a step farther, however, you could say that all of physical reality exists within a morphogenic field of sorts, what some might call the 'matrix' of physical reality. This isn't entirely far from a theory involving physical reality as consisting entirely of complex curvatures of spacetime. And that is a theory that is being given a great deal of scientific study, and even application, at least mathematically.
As far as it's applicability from a metaphysical sense, some individuals have suggested that alterations to this morphogenic field can be caused psionically, as it were, towards ends like shapeshifting, altering the brain, etc - but in my opinion that is a misunderstanding of what this field is and how the body works within it. We're talking about cell growth, which happens quickly on the micro scale, but takes much much longer on the macro scale. It's also sometimes equated with the etheric body, or said to be located more intimately in line with the body, with the etheric body being directly 'above it'.
The morphogenic field is sometimes also addressed as a component of healing mutation based diseases when it comes to alternative energy therapies, specifically cancers, as cancer is essentially a cell mutation problem.
Hope the offers some insight to those coming along and interested.
peace
