have you looked for the song of the nibelungs/ nibelungenlied? or the prose edda? i believe there are several different translations out.

while you're at it, i know its not literature but check out Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen.

For your viewing pleasures, it covers four rings, one of which is my favorite: Die Walkure. for obvious reasons, i should think.

while his operas are not necessarily accurate and loyal to the mythology...if all your looking for is a good story...thats where you should go (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

also i was looking around for possible reference material and this looked like a good site: http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/index.htm

you should check it out.

The first part or "prophecy" of the poetic edda confuses me, even though it's the most important (or so ive heard).

and the second part tells little of myths and all of moral and practical doctrine.

But i will finish it for the sake of itself.

incidentally i was plaiing to invoke thor or odin. I did not know which one, so i asked my tarrot cards for the results of Odin, Thor, and waiting until i finish the edda.

you know what i got?

Odin: Hermit

Thor: Emperor

Wait: Hanged man.

never knew fate could be so sarcastic and literal (IMG:style_emoticons/default/13.gif)

But what did i expect?

lol, maybe loki would be the fool.

heres another good site for you to visit. its not just the poetic edda...there some of texts on thor here as well, etc etc. you should like it. keep me informed how your ritual turns out...i hope all for the best. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

http://www.angelfire.com/on/Wodensharrow/texts.html

anyway...sounds like you are committed to learning more about them. i am glad that you are not rushing in. while my specialty does not lie with invoking gods, Odin is def. one of the better ones to start off with, so i hear (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) of course, he should like you even better if you demonstrate an unbreakable zeal in the quest for knowledge...so to say if you string yourself up by the ankle just to divine some runes...you will surely get something! (but please don't take that literally, hehe)
